EMS Fashion (E-mandi) brings traditional tailoring to the digital age with Fashion as a Service platform.
In the world of Fast Fashion & evolution in this area, where sustainability is not of prime importance, yet the concern is stretching thin & widespread, a quiet revolution is also starting to grow toward more conscious consumerism & socially focused Entrepreneurial efforts.
EMS Fashion, started as a run-of-the-mill apparel & merchandize selling store such as e-mandi, couldn’t really stay the same. It is now working on redefining how “fashion conscious”, rather “reflection conscious” customers engage with bespoke clothing service providers across area, country & beyond; connect with tailors, fabric vendors etc. with a tech enabled digital ecosystem under single platform.
Maitreyee Sinha Chowdhury, still a tech solution & corporate leader working on her passion project on the side as the co-founder explains, “EMS Fashion aims to offer a dignified, personalized alternative to mass produced fast fashion.”
The platform is being built to operate as a full-blown ecosystem combining custom tailoring services, transparent & ethical sourcing, AI driven design recommendation, remote fitting services along with sustainable & circular e-commerce into a unified customer partner experience.
“Our goal is simple-- to bring sustainability & personalization back into the heart of fashion, where we do not need to fit-in to standard sizes.”-says Chowdhury, whose work in emerging technology almost over 2 decades, has earned her authority in both corporate innovation & grassroots development circles, esp. when it comes to building platforms.
Some Opportunities & threat areas as we see as of today, where strategic finesse would be important to succeed.
Bridging tech & tradition.
EMS aims to empower local tailors through a decentralized, made-to-order model—unlike traditional e-commerce. It enables home-based or microunit operations, expanding their reach and income potential without centralized stock or warehousing & bring quality control & aggregation in this part of clothing partners.
Socio Economic Shift.
Expected impact area is more than financial, esp. in India, as EMS fashion is trying to aggregate, revive & onboard a sector, long sidelined by Fast fashion. With a conservative estimation of 7 – 8 million tailor onboarding (in next few years) mostly in the unregistered & informal sector for clothing (not just Styling & fashion), EMS Fashion offers a digital infrastructure to access national & international demand for tailors for bespoke fashion.
Sustainability goal aligning with Circular economy
EMS focuses on reduced landfill waste, carbon footprint & water usage per garment by adopting to slow fashion made-to- order alternative. Idea is about achieving almost zero overstocking & reduced packaging waste offering eco-coconscious & sustainable business model.
Re-cycled & clothing & accessorized fashion offers contribution to circular economy.
EMS Fashion (EMS APPAREL INDIA PVT LTD) plans to expand its footprint in the UK & EU in next few years to aggregate the network of bespoke fashion there as slower, personalized & conscious Fashion alternative to prevailing cheap & fast fashion option. EMS is not replacing Fast Fashion, rather it forays into this area too.
Overall, with an honest review, we do see sustenance & entry barriers initially, as globally customers are almost dopamine intoxicated by fast fashion, the speed, the trend chase. Also, a big part of disarrayed & low income & minimally educated tailoring cluster will not feel comfy using a digital platform quickly. --To which Maitreyee responds “ About the tailoring partners, yes I expect barrier, but once we did not feel comfy with online shopping & digital payments, but we transformed, I envision same transformation with increased income potential for our tailoring partners, Also Fast fashion is always there for impulsive buyers & trend chasers, this alternative is for who want to stand out uniquely for who they are through their style statement.”
